Get the Book: As an. That is a clear linear progression for this book and your journey as an author. For The Healthy Writer, we struggled on the order of the chapters until late in the writing process when it became clear that the transformation was from Unhealthy to Healthy Writer. We structured the book into those two main parts, and then everything fell into place.

To be able to deliver the content that you know the reader wants and needs, your structure must prepare places for it. That is why I want you to focus on your book’s structure before adding any content.

Here is a link to a series of five videos. You may find that leaving chapters out of your novel actually adds to the mood. An excellent example of this is Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. The intentional absence of chapters feeds into the overall bleakness and never-ending grind of the story.

Don’t Divide Into Chapters at First. Your first draft is no place to think about chapter structure. K M Weiland’s methods guide writers to understand story and scene structure.
